The Grammar-Translation Method

 

Have you ever heard about this language teaching method? If not, don't worry, we will explain you.

First, what are the goals objectives of the teachers using the method?

There are two main goals to grammar–translation classes. One is to develop students' reading ability to a level where they can read literature in the target language. The other is to develop students' general mental discipline.

Second, what are the roles that both teacher and student play in this method? 

Teachers are just guides with a strict attitude, taking full control of the class.That is why teachers requires few specialized skills because test of grammar rules and translation are easy to construct and be objectively scrod. Teachers provide translation of new grammatical items, to answer students’ questions about the meaning of items, to monitor students’ work for grammatical accuracy, to develop translation activities. Students take a passive attitude in the classroom, since they only do everything the teacher says in order to learn and practice grammar rules, to try out new grammar items in written texts.

Third, what are some characteristics of the teaching-learning process?

a) In this method  the students' native language is frequently used.
b) Students have to translate texts from the target language into their native language.
c)Students learn the grammar of the target language deductively.
d) Students memorize vocabulary and grammar rules.

Have you ever heard of active learning? For those who did not know it, active learning is a learning method that basically consists of the continuous participation of students in the classroom and that contributes favorably to the process of acquiring objective knowledge, or in this case the target language. Or according to Richard M. Felder and Rebecca Brent (2016) in their essay "Active Learning" they mention that this method is based on short activities related to individual courses that are done in small groups, where all students in a class are called upon to do , alternating with instructor-led intervals in which student responses are processed and new information is presented.

Currently, most students are not trained in new technologies and see a great obstacle to use them to carry out different activities that take place in the classroom, and this clearly influences their low learning process since they feel frustrated. Likewise, the little training of teachers in ICT causes misuse of these, and students may feel confused and not be able to achieve the planned objectives.    This resistance affects their understanding since students currently use these new technologies in leisure time and not to study.
