The Silent Way Method
Have you ever heard about this language teaching method? If not, don't worry, we will explain you.
First, what are the goals objectives of the teachers using this method?
The main goal of teachers who use this method is to seek that his students can use the target language to express themselves and show their thoughts, perceptions and feelings. Also this method helps beginning-level students gain basic fluency in the target language, with the ultimate aim being near-native language proficiency and good pronunciation. In order to help them achieve this, teachers emphasize self-reliance.
Second, what are the roles that both teacher and student play in this method?
The role of the teacher is that of technician or engineer. The teacher's task is to focus the students' attention, and provide exercises to help them develop language facility; however, to ensure their self-reliance, the teacher should only help the students as much as is strictly necessary. For example, teachers will often give students time to correct their own mistakes before giving them the answer to a question.Teachers also avoid praise or criticism, as it can discourage students from developing self-reliance.
On the other hand, the role of the students is to get independent and can learn cooperatively. Students have to learn by interacting with each other, interchanging ideas or answers. So, sometimes a student can become an independent person but also a student that has to work in groups. This method makes students vary at the time of knowing when they would work alone and when they can work in groups. Another important student’s role is to be responsible and to to accomplish the entire task given by the teacher.
