Digital Literacies and the Language Classroom

Summary

Digital literacies, in short, is how much knowledge we have about the use of new technologies in order to improve our skills and perform satisfactorily in these digital times. And this is essential since we will be teachers of the famous digital natives, and as digital immigrants we have the responsibility of updating ourselves every day to use these technologies correctly. However, they use them for purely social activities, in addition they are not attracted by the technology itself, but by the facilities and enjoyment that these offer them when performing traditional activities.

                                                    Essay

Currently, we have changed our traditional materials, such as books, notebooks, pencils, among others, with non-physical materials and that provided us with new technologies, for example, web pages, the Office package, electronic books, and thus, an infinity of them.

Definitely, digital materials complement and even displace several traditional ones, since they facilitate and help arouse curiosity and participation in various academic activities and help us provide a good education. They even help provide good feedback and make the classes more interactive by making use of websites, platforms, blogs, among others.

Throughout the academic year, using the same approach, it is important to keep their interest, making use of technological tools, for example, appropriate websites that are in line with their level, current digital images that help in vocabulary practice, short videos on YouTube to motivate and take advantage of them, make audio through podcasts for free on the web, and that they create blogs to practice their writing skills.

Among the advantages we have greater access to information, learning becomes more interactive and with it a higher quality of education. And the disadvantages are that not everyone has the resources to access these new technologies and not all of us are trained to use them.
